Okay I have been thinking about the who "Magic" ideal and at this point there are 2 ways of going about it. Neither is mutually exclusive though so my thoughts are.
1. Magic is just a fluff way of saying how you activate you powers. This limits you to the powers and weaknesses you have but the weaknesses will form the spells/wands/books/amulets etc.
2. Magic as an independant power. It will work much like Gadgets and have the capability of mimicing other powers at a lower level. So if you have magic 4 you can mimic Powerblast 3. If I go this route I am thinking of making it very similar to gadgets where you will need to research your "spells/incantations/etc" each one will have set effects and can be activated on command once it has been researched. Your Fireball spell will always mimic Explosive Powerblast 3 even if you progress to Magic of 7, unless you research a more powerful version of that spell.
Going with both of these ways is equally viable as going with either of them. Both are very versatile, one has more direct power, the other has more versatility for a magic character if they are able to prepare/research enough spells.

First, for game purposes I really suggest you stick with Magic. Other words mean something to people.
ReplyDeleteFor me Magick is the real kind. All the forces that are unknown to science but still exist. But that is not important right now.
What is important is that if you use the term 'Magick' for the game I would be offended and we don't want that.
Otherwise I would go with #2 but there are some other angles to Magic. Connection to beings of power is the most obvious. If a Mage can do that then they gain a significant power boost, at a cost of course.
There is also the whole 'Alter Reality' spells. I have not read enough of your powers lists to know about this. Mental Illusion is one thing but a powerful Mage can really change things on a wide scale.
Always found that a bit tricky to quantify. I had Mages in Champions Campains but they just dumped points into a generic Magic Power pool.

I know the other spelling can be a sensitive subject. I am of your line of thought though...but spelling doesn't mean much to me.
ReplyDeleteAnyways,
the more I think about it I am going have an independant power, and allow folks to set themselves up as magic users by using the weakenesses system to force them to use the trinkets generally associated with magic (wand/book/amulet/etc.)
As for Reality Alteration...thats another mess entirely.
I actual think that most of the magical powers should be covered by the powers as is. It's like am electric based superhero will have their power beam deal electrical damage (for flavor). Magic should be a more of a flavor choice using the mechanics already in place instead of a mechanical choice. But that is my personal opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis discussion and the gadgets discussion has mad eme think I may build a "common genre" builds area. This way I can say if you want to make a Ironman guy I suggest X, Y, Z. Or You want David Copperfield do A, B, C or D, E, F.
ReplyDeleteI'm going with both ways of doing things here. look in the Ma-R Power doc to see the write up.
